In 150 AD, Claudius Ptolemy, a Roman astronomer from Egypt, wrote a book, known as Geography, about mapmaking. In his book, Ptolemy introduced the graph-like lines we use today on maps to chart the lines of latitude and longitude. Ptolemy recorded about 8,000 different coordinates of places known to him. His work had a great influence on the study of cartography (the science of mapmaking).

Claudius Ptolemy was a Greco-Roman mathematician, astronomer, geographer and astrologer. He was born and resided in the city of Alexandria in Egypt, which was at that time a province of the Roman Empire. He wrote in Koine Greek and held Roman citizenship. In 150 AD, Claudius Ptolemy wrote a book, known as "Geography", about mapmaking. In his book, he introduced the graph-like lines of latitude and longitude as a means to chart coordinate points of locations around the world. Ptolemy recorded about 8,000 different coordinates of places known to him.
