Cryoconite refers to the dark particulate that accumulates on ice and snow. It is comprised of cyanobacteria, water, mineral dust and soot. Other bacteria can also be present. The cyanobacteria has long fliaments which entangle the volcanic ash or desert dust particles and the wildfire soot to create the particulate, attracting atmospheric moisture which condenses and helps to create a tiny environment. Inside, the water blackens from decaying remnants of the bacteria. As these cryoconite particles accumulate on the white snow their darkness causes them to absorb sunlight and to warm. This in turn causes acceleraed melting of the snow/ice.
