Shemitah year is the 7th year of rest found in the Bible. The fields were given a year of rest from planting and the people were to live off the prior year's harvest, not to plant or sow for that year. The seventh Shemitah year is the year of Jubilee, when all debts are forgiven (or "written off"), and property is returned to the owners and slaves and prisoners are freed.
